I played beach volleyball at Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach for over thirty years.
A few hundred yards from the volleyball courts and around a rock cliff is the Pirate Tower.
This sixty foot structure was built in 1926 with concrete walls and the base constructed from ocean stones.
It was used as a staircase from the home of William Edward Brown.
Brown sold the house to a retired naval captain named Harold Kendrick. Kendrick was a pirate fanatic and invited children over to the house for pirate games and stories.
The house has changed owners several times since, bought at one point by actress Bette Midler.
I have photographed the tower many times over the years, but I had always had this series of images in mind.
I have known Julianne and Rachel since before they were born.
I always had them in mind for this series, so finally in September of 2024 we drove to the tower after having breakfast with Lori at Ruby's Diner on Coast Highway.
