In June of 2018 Lori and I flew to Helsinki, Finland and spent several days there.
Next we flew to Riga, Latvia and spent several days there before flying to Amsterdam.
After Amsterdam we took a train to Rotterdam and stayed at the New York Hotel
on Rotterdam's Wilhelmina Pier in the harbor.
This building was the headquarters of the Holland America Line built in the early 1900's.
This served as the gateway for nearly two million Europeans emigrants sailing to America.
The building was reopened as a hotel in 1993 and preserves its rich history.
The next day we boarded a Holland America cruise ship and stopped in several ports
in northern Europe before arriving in St Petersburg, Russia.
We were scheduled to spend two days there but because of high winds the ship was not able to leave
the narrow channel in the Baltic and we spent one extra day there.
We visited the Heritage Museum, the Church on Spilled Blood, and the famous Peterhof Palace.

This image of a ship's figurehead was taken in St Petersburg harbor on a huge tall ship at anchor.
Below is a detail from the image.
