In September 2014 Lori and I traveled to Prague in the Czech Republic. We spent several days together their, then Lori joined a Rick Steves Eastern Europe tour while I rented a car and took off for a Eastern Europe tour on my own.
After driving through the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania I arrived in Bulgaria. I visited several of the port towns on the Black Sea, then drove inland to the Rila Mountains below the capital city of Sofia.
My destination was Rila Monastery. This is jaw-dropping beautiful and fascinating.
This is one of the few structures that I ever just stood and admired after walking inside.
Named after its hermit founder, Saint Ivan of Rila (876-946), it houses about 60 monks.
Saint Ivan lived in a cave nearby and his followers built the monastery in the 10th century.
This image shows the side of the church, a souvenier shop and a four-story building for housing.
