In 2010 I drove from my home in Dana Point, California up highway 395 that runs along the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in central California. This is a fascinating drive with lots to see and do.
For this image I stopped and spent the night at the ski-resort town of Mammoth Lakes.
This is an all-year round mountain resort with skiing in the winter on Mammoth Mountain at 11,053 feet.
Hiking, biking, fishing, backpacking up the Sierras, wonderful scenery and geothermal activity
from the dormant volcano that is Mammoth Mountain.
I got up early in the morning and drove to Red's Meadow Campground. This drive goes right by Devils Postpile National Monument. After arriving at the campground it is a short hike to reach Rainbow Falls.
I set my camera on my tripod just downstream and up on a rise overlooking the falls for this image.
