Cathedral and Leaning Tower, Pisa, Italy

In October of 2019 Lori and I travelled with our friends Jack and Kerry to Italy.
After leaving Cinque Terre we drove to Pisa and photographed the campanile,
or freestanding bell tower of the cathedral, commonly known as the leaning tower of Pisa.
Construction began in 1173, but because of poor soil the tower started to lean.
The lean became obvious after the third story and work was put on hold for nearly a century due to war. This allowed the tower to lean even more. When finished the tower had a 4 degree lean.
​In the late 20th century the tilt reached a dangerous level and engineers removed soil from under the non-leaning side and changed the lean from 5.5 degrees to less than 4 degrees, which should last for centuries to come.
