In 2012 Lori and I flew to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.
The next day we drove our car into the neighboring country of Slovenia, to the incredible Lake Bled. Located in the Julian Alps at 1,558 feet this is one of the prettiest lakes in the world.
In the western part of the lake is blejski otok. This is a small island covered with trees and several buildings. One of the buildings is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While inside the church Lori and I both pulled on the rope and rang the church bell.
The story of this bell is as follows:
A young widow lived at Bled Castle. She gathered all her silver and gold and had a bell forged to be donated to the Mother of God on the Lake in memory of her late husband. During the transport to the island, a storm raged and the boat with the bell and the boatmen sank into the lake depths. The widow withdrew to a Rome convent in grief. After her death, the Pope sent to Bled Island another bell that people have loved to ring ever since, turning to the Mother of God on the Lake with their wishes and requests for help.
