In 2008 I travelled to Australia with my ninety-year-old father-in-law, Hal Jacobs.
He spent most of World War II in Australia, and we went to all the places he was at from 1941 to 1945. Our first stop was Brisbane, which was the first place Hal's ship landed after leaving Pearl Harbor. We visited the horse racing track where all the American soldiers were bivouaced.
On our last day in this area we visited an animal compound that included koalas.
This one was awake and active unlike most of his peers.
