In 2008 I travelled to Australia with my ninety-year-old father-in-law, Hal Jacobs.
He spent most of World War II in Australia, and we went to all the places he was at from 1941 to 1945. Our first stop was Brisbane, which was the first place Hal's ship landed after leaving Pearl Harbor. We visited the horse racing track where all the American soldiers were bivouaced.
The next day we drove to Byron Bay, just south of Brisbane and spent the day.
While there I photographed people on the beach with their kayaks and the lighthouse
on top of the hill. I love the image just the way it was,
but in this case I think the "faux painting" image is even better.
